How to fix recalled Nuna RAVA baby car seat

Disclaimer: The steps below are based on my personal experience. Perform this at your own risk/fault.

Background on the Recall

Nuna recently issued a voluntary recall for their RAVA car seat, detailed on their website: https://nunababy.com/usa/recalls-rava1

I’ve owned a Nuna RAVA for three years, so I was quick to check whether ours was affected. After securing the seat belt, tightening it, and giving it a pull, I realized there was little resistance—it clearly wasn’t holding tension as it should.

I registered for the recall on Nuna’s site and received confirmation that they’d email me when a cleaning kit becomes available. In the meantime, I decided to investigate the source of the issue myself.

Locating the Issue

  1. Access the front harness adjuster:
    1. Lay the car seat on its back.
    2. Extend the footrest by pulling it out and up.
  2. Remove the screws to reveal the mechanism:
    1. Underneath the footrest, you’ll see two screws holding the harness adjuster button in place.
    2. Once you remove those screws, the button assembly will lift up, exposing the adjuster mechanism.
  3. Identify and remove any debris:
    1. In my case, a small crumb had wedged itself into the harness adjuster’s teeth.
    2. Removing that crumb restored the proper tension on the seat belt when pulled.
